#1846: 8 Reales Cartagena 25.532 grams / gramos. 

 

Obverse:  Quartered shield with arms of Castile and Leon in correct order.  Pomegranate at bottom of shield.  Value VIII reading upward to left of the shield. Mintmark C to right of shield, Assayer S  right of shield and beneath the mintmark.   Reverse: Pillars with waves.    Date not visible, should be at 11 O'clock.  The only date known for this coin type is 1655.  R/L M48-2 and L/R M48C-2, C&T Type 88, number 349.

Anverso: Escudo de Castilla y Leon. Granada en la parte inferior del escudo. Valor VIII que lee hacia arriba a la izquierda del escudo. Reverso: Columnas coronadas. Marca de ceca C, Ensayador S.  Fecha no visible, debe estar a las 11.  La única fecha sabida para este tipo de la moneda es 1655. R/L M48-2 y L/R M48C-2, C&T Tipo 88, numero 349.

Notice that the right pillar has two turns of a ribbon showing in the upper part.  We have not seen this on any other like coin, nor for that matter any other Colombian cob.  Ex: UBS sale 45.   Ex: Schuckmann Collection, Renaissance Auctions sale Dec 13, 2001 lot 3110.
