The
coin presented here, Macuquina 1851, is unlisted in Calicó,
R/L and L/R. All three of these works record and illustrate
a similar coin, with the denomination IIII to the left of the shield
and the mint mark / assayer combination CE to the right of the
shield. Calicó (number 617c),
R/L (M36-4) and L/R (M36C-4) illustrate the same coin.
Christensen illustrates a Cartagena 4R with the denomination
IIII to the right of the shield, but the mint mark and assayer are
not visible and neither the obverse or reverse are the same as
macuquina 1851. Reference "Treasures of the Conception,
May 14, 1982 by Henry Christensen, Inc." auction, lot 215. If
we compare 1851 with the Restrepo image we find the following
diagnostics on the reverse (cross side).
-
Location
of "H I" of HISPANIARVM.
-
Castles
from same punch, notice the tall windows in particular.
-
Left
cross arm has repaired break just left of the center of the
cross.
-
Lions
are made from same punch.
-
Top
right lion has a stray mark extended down form the left foot
almost to the cross arm, see photos below.
-
At 12
o'clock there is a cross at the top serving as a legend
stop. There is an unidentified mark extending from the arc
to the left side of the small cross stop. This mark comes
after the final digit of the date. Date not visible on #
1851.
|
Because
the reverse is identical to the known 1633 dated specimen, we date
this piece as 1633. |
